What Is a Certified Sober Companion? 

If you look up the sober companion definition, it will state that this is a position where the person guides a patient along the road to recovery from drugs and alcohol. This is a human services-related career path with the goal of helping people through emotional and physical support.  

As a sober companion, you will work with patients to help them:  

  • Abstaining from all drugs and alcohol 
  • Attend meetings 
  • Establish healthy routines 
  • Find employment 
  • Complete a final assessment 
  • Prepare for life outside of rehab 

They can also be there during high-risk situations, such as social events or holiday parties, and keep them on the sober path.  

There is currently no certification available for a sober companion. Some of the soft skills necessary for this position include excellent communication skills, active listening, the ability to express and show empathy, excellent problem-solving skills, and crisis intervention experience. Those who have gone through addiction recovery in the past make excellent sober companions.

Support Staff – Axiom Care, Phoenix, AZ – Support staff will monitor patients, transport them for treatment, communicate and document all occurrences, and help provide a sfe, and caring environment. Some of the job functions include client supervision, facility compliance checks, meal prep and service, general housekeeping, and other duties as assigned.  
  2. Sober Home Live-In House Manager – Prodigys House, Pompano Beach, FL – In this position, you will provide oversight, direction, guidance, supervision, and leadership for all residents inside the home. This includes engaging all residents in conversation and activities, ensuring all residents are following the rules, being perceptive of residents who are struggling, and ensuring that all residents have all essential items and other tasks.  
  3. House Manager/Resident Assistant – Apricity, Appleton, WI – The duties of this position include monitoring all residents, intervening in crisis situations, and documenting and reporting observations and pertinent information. You will need good written and verbal communication skills, familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite, pass a caregiver background check, and other hard and soft skills.
