Position Information

The Department of Human Services (DHS) is seeking a Youth Development Coordinator to provide comprehensive, trauma informed, culturally responsive mental health and substance use services to help youth, with the support of their parents, thrive in their environments. This position will report to the Prevention Director and assist with daily operations, strategic planning, integrating positive youth development principles into policies, and developing/implementing youth engagement and outreach activities. This position will also collaborate with a team to empower a diverse population of youth to achieve a successful transition to adulthood, through multicultural, comprehensive, and innovative programs that address their social, academic, health and wellbeing, as well as career needs.

Duties include:

  • Researching and facilitating youth development activities that encourage leadership, self-confidence, mental health, alcohol/drug and suicide prevention, and other positive, healthy life-style topics;
  • Coordinating all training/meeting/event logistics;
  • Initiating, organizing, and participating in community events and educational opportunities related to wellness and prevention services, including recruiting community members to participate in youth-led board, wellness, and prevention activities;
  • Serving as the liaison to the Teen Network Board and represent the youth voice in the Arlington Partnership for Children, Youth and Families Commission;
  • Assisting in capacity building of youth-led and youth-focused board by supporting and implementing activities, practices, policies, and systems to sustain quality youth programming;
  • Developing KPIs, ongoing assessments, reporting mechanisms, and other accountability measures to ensure racial equity is incorporated;
  • Supporting the management of the Prevention and Board’s web presence, including the website, social media, and other marketing assets.

The ideal candidates will have the following:

  • The ability to work cooperatively with culturally diverse clients and workforce to understand the impact of race and culture on youth experiences;
  • Experience in implementing Youth Development Models in working with youth;
  • Demonstrated experience as a facilitator/trainer;
  • Experience using popular education and experiential learning techniques; and
  • Ability to integrate principals into training, program design, and practice.

Selection Criteria

Minimum:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a human services-related field; and
  • Considerable experience in human services program administration and/or facilitation of workshops/activities for youth development.

Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis. Desirable:   Preference may be given to candidates with a master’s degree in a human service field or considerable experience in one or more of the following:

  • Managing issues related to middle/high school youth and young adults (youth justice, healthy relationships, college access and career readiness, student affairs, etc.);
  • Participating with advocacy or community organization efforts for child well-being and/or racial equity; and
  • Facilitating or delivering training on a range of youth-relevant issues.

Special Requirements

Background Check: A pre-hire background check will be made on all candidates selected for employment. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information. Completion of a State of Virginia Central Registry Check.

Additional Information

Work Hours: Monday – Friday, flexible schedule and telework options. Will be required to work at least two evenings per week and some weekends. Outside of Virginia travel may be required. The official job title is Program Specialist. Work Location: DHS’ primary office is located at 2100 Washington Blvd. However, work duties may be performed throughout the county.
