The University of Washington’s Division of General Internal Medicine (GIM) is considered to be among the top five Divisions of General Internal Medicine in the nation. General Internal Medicine, established in 1985, has rapidly grown to be the largest Division in the UW Department of Medicine. The Division has a workforce of approximately 500, including nearly 400 faculty members who are known for their outstanding research, teaching and patient care. The Division conducts its activities at the UW Medical Center (UWMC), Harborview Medical Center (HMC), and the VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS), with research sites located at multiple sites across Seattle.

The Division of General Internal Medicine in the Department of Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Psychometrist 2.

The ACT study is a cohort of approximately 2,000 – 3,000 subjects over age 65 from Kaiser Permanente Washington. We have been enrolling cognitively intact subjects since 1994 and seeing them every two years. If they should start to show symptoms of cognitive decline, we do evaluations to assess their memory. We ask epidemiological, medical and family history questions. We draw blood at intake into the study, and at every follow-up visit. Participants can consent to brain donation at death. The evaluation for cognitive decline involves a physician visit to do a neurological exam, and a visit by the psychometrist to do psychometric testing. Once diagnosed with dementia, the subject is followed once a year rather than every two years.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Psychometrist 2 will:

• Schedule their own home visits with study participants.

• Travel to study participant’s homes and conduct enrollment or follow-up visits. This includes administering psychometric tests and other research questionnaires. Assess situations that may require adapting which tests will be performed.

• Travel to study participant’s homes to conduct evaluation visits for those experiencing some cognitive decline. This includes administering a battery of psychometric tests and assessing participant for cognitive concerns.

• Score tests, observe behavior of individuals being tested and write a simple report for use by a psychologist at meetings.

• Participate in consensus meetings and offer insights when applicable.

• Conduct Telephone or Home visits for study participants who have been diagnosed with dementia

• Assist the Psychometrist Supervisor with the coordination of psychological testing activities for the ACT study as needed. Participate in the development or modification of tests or testing procedures as needed.

• Work independently under general direction of Psychometrist Supervisor and ACT Research Coordinator.

• Perform related duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS:

A Master’s degree with major study in psychology or a closely related field with emphasis in tests and measurement, OR a Bachelor’s degree in behavioral or social science AND two years of experience in psychological testing, OR two years of experience as a Psychometrist 1 OR equivalent education/experience. :

• Must be able to travel independently to subjects’ homes and have reliable transportation.

• Will be required to travel within the Seattle area as well as to other areas throughout Western Washington.

• Must have excellent attention to details.

• Must be comfortable interacting with persons over 65 years of age.

• Must be flexible and be able to adjust easily to different testing environments or different participant situations.

• Must be comfortable working in all kinds of environments, such as private homes, Assisted Living Facilities, Adult Family Homes, and other kinds of living situations.
