The Benefit and Wellness area of Human Resources has the mission to empower employees to take control of their health through wellness initiatives focused on physical, emotional, educational, and financial well-being.  The Mental Health Strategist partners with key stakeholders and the HR team to connect individuals we employ, educate, and serve with mental health support, as aligned with GCSI’s Strategic Plan.  Overall this position is charged with designing, developing, and executing organizational mental health supports to achieve this goal while remaining a contributor to GCSI’s overall mission.  The Mental Health Strategist creates system-wide solutions, partnering with functional leaders to adapt and adjust solutions for their unique areas, and utilizes internal and external resources to maximize impact.  This role also implements strategic solutions to build the capacity of leaders and managers to support mental health in the workplace and to destigmatize the use of mental health supports.  Additionally, the Mental Health Strategist participates as an active leader on the Extended Leadership Team for organizational-wide initiatives and in support of the Executive Team.

Example Duties and Activities 

  • Creates and ensures the alignment of the mental health efforts with the strategic plan and business goals for the organization.  Partners with key stakeholders to understand their needs related to mental health supports and helps build an integrated strategy, execution plan, and budget for mental health supports for those GCSI employs, educates, and serves.
  • Differentiates mental health supports for various parts of the organization, including supports for employees, for students in schools, and for participants in mission programs.
  • Determines when outside vendors and support are appropriate for mental health supports, and identifies, establishes, and manages partnerships with appropriate partners and vendors.  Manages external vendors’ relationships and expectations including negotiating and contract management.
  • Determines opportunities for funding including researching different options such as Medicaid billing.
  • Establishes metrics to track data on mental health initiatives, including the take-up rate of mental health supports, including direct support, training, and third-party partners, across the organization.
  • Utilizes metrics to evaluate mental health support initiatives and return on investment.  Creates and presents activities, outputs, and outcomes reports.
  • Develops a multi-faceted strategy to reduce the stigma around mental health supports and normalize the use of mental health supports for those GCSI employs, educates, and serves.
  • Partners with functional leaders, key stakeholders, and HRBPs to adapt and adjust mental health supports in response to evolving needs.  Identifies ongoing and evolving needs by consulting with stakeholders and administering needs assessments.
  • Plans and facilitates an organization-wide mental health strategic plan committee to coordinate input and buy-in, and ensure implementation of mental health initiatives.
  • Manages, evaluates, and improves current mental health practices across the organization.
  • Conceptualizes, executes, and facilitates mental health support training for leaders and managers.  Collaborates with Learning and Development to incorporate mental health training and support where appropriate.
  • Maintains effective communication with support and core operations areas.
  • Manages the mental health budget and forecasts expenses for the upcoming year.
  • Networks and benchmarks internally and externally to stay up-to-date on trends, increase the knowledge base, and strive for continual improvement and outcomes.

Required Competencies 

  • Degree and Credential Requirements – Bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology, or a related field and is licensed as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), Licensed Addiction Counselor (LCAC), Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Health Services Provider in Psychology (HSPP), or board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (APRN).
  • Program Management (Mental Health) – Is highly skilled at developing, implementing, organizing, monitoring, evaluating, and improving a comprehensive organization-wide mental health strategy, including writing policies and procedures, mapped to business goals that improve organizational performance.  Is highly creative and innovative at creating systems that meet the unique needs of diverse individuals.  Has documented success in interpreting information and making necessary adjustments to achieve program outcomes/metrics.  Plans and attends to details and pursues quality in accomplishing multiple tasks in an organized and timely fashion.  Exhibits careful attention to not only creating a plan but executing it with a focus on managing deadlines and making the plan work.  Takes initiative without waiting to be directed, does what is asked, and works until the job is completed.  Takes ownership of mistakes and learns from them rather than makes excuses.
  • Technical Knowledge – Has proficient knowledge of MS Office and Internet navigation. G Suite experience is a plus.  Strong digital and multimedia navigation expertise including learning management systems and integrations with HRIS.  Workday knowledge is an additional plus.
  • Communication Skills – Articulates thoughts and expresses ideas effectively using oral, written, visual, and non-verbal communication skills, as well as listening skills to comprehend others’ needs. Delivers information in person, in writing, and in a digital world.

Is able to receive as well as provide feedback to improve performance or processes; builds and maintains customer satisfaction and is adept at vendor negotiation.
  • Results-Oriented Is moved to recognize what results are important and what steps need to be taken to achieve goals or targets for self or others. Adept at effectively prioritizing multiple priorities and is driven to continually improve the results.
  • Diversity Awareness – Works effectively delivering assistance that is mindful of different cultural/language traditions, showing respect and validation for diverse communities/organizations, low-income families, people with developmental and/or physical disabilities, and models consistency with policies regarding human rights, equality, equity, and diversity.
  • Continuous Learning – Stays current on legal mandates related to the state/local adult and child protective services.  Has a thirst for knowledge and applies it appropriately. Driven to find answers through research and collaboration.

Other Requirements

  • Is willing to conduct local travel within the territory of GCSI.
  • Background Screening – All candidates must pass a pre-employment background check.  Must have a valid driver’s license, up-to-date auto insurance, and a good driving record.
