This position serves as a MHP-level Clinician working closely with the King County District Court. The successful candidate should have expertise working with individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders who have court involvement and/or have been incarcerated. A work history of working with individuals experiencing homelessness is also ideal.

 

The Competency Boundary Spanner (Case Manager) is responsible for working with individuals referred to court when legal competency has been raised and due to a history with the court, the attorneys do not believe the individual will be found legally competent.

 


Full medical, dental, disability, 25 plus days off per year to start.

The Competency Boundary Spanner (CBS) will work to:

 

  • Identify needs and link these individuals with community resources, including behavioral health treatment in the criminal justice system and reducing in-patient hospital days.
  • When enrolled in existing services, the (CBS) will work to reconnect and ensure linkage back, when appropriate.
  • This position will provide community-based outreach and engagement-focused case management in order to ensure linkage and relationship with ongoing providers is secure.

 

 

The (CBS) will coordinate with King County Crisis and Commitment Services, King County Prosecutors, Public Defense staff, community-based providers, jail Health Services Psychiatric and Social Services staff, and other court, housing and community partners, as needed.

 


Essential Functions:

 

  • Ensure services and interventions are strength-based and promote recovery and resiliency.
  • Provide mental health support to the King County District Court Criminal Justice Team for linkage to mental health and other services.
  • Perform a needs assessment for the purpose of identifying resources needed that can be addressed through available community resources to support mental health recovery and reduce jail and hospital days.
  • Provide direct linkage between the court system and identified treatment services for individuals served.
  • Participate in King County Diversion and Re-entry Services system of care, and contribute to equity and social justice through the decriminalization of individuals with mental health and substance use disorders (SUD).
  • Comply with Community House and SMC policies and Procedures.
  • Apply recovery concepts and Trauma Informed Care, with all individuals served.

 

Education and Experience:

 

  • Master’s Degree in social services field preferred or Bachelor’s Degree with 2 years of experience.
  • Mental Health Professional (MHP) status preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with community mental health, individuals with severe and persistent mental illness who come into contact with local criminal justice system is essential.
  • Two years’ experience working with individuals with severe and persistent mental illness, individuals with chronic substance use issues, and individuals involved in the criminal justice system is preferred; at least six months’ experience working with courts and defendants is recommended.
  • A working knowledge of co-occurring behavioral health issues is preferred.
  • A working understanding of systemic inequities the population experiences from a social justice framework.
  • CDP/CDPT preferred.

 

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

 

  • Expertise with Co-Occurring disorders and Forensic background is a necessary part of the position; individuals who do not have some aspect of this experience will be considered, and training will be provided upon hire.
  • An understanding of case management approaches to provide services to individuals with psychiatric disability.
  • Good working knowledge of community and social service resources in King County and Washington State.
  • Familiarity with state and local mental health delivery systems, including knowledge of various funding principles and clinical service mandates.
  • Ability to organize ones’ own work, to work independently and to initiate collegial, supervisory, and consultative work.
  • Capacity to appreciate and work well with individuals who have high mental health needs and maybe experiencing homelessness and living in extreme poverty.
  • Good diagnostic assessment skills.
  • The ability and skills to work as a team member and understand the criminal justice system.
  • Working knowledge of Mental Health Courts, Jail systems and behavioral dynamics of individuals who become incarcerated, is essential.
  • Cultural competency and a working understanding of providing culturally responsive and culturally informed services, including a commitment to the City of Seattle Race and Social Justice Initiative and the King County Equity and Social Justice Initiative.
