Job Title: Behavioral Health Tech. – DETOX
Reports To: Director of Nursing
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Hourly)

Position Summary: The Behavioral Health Technician provides basic nursing care, aids with activities of daily living, and assists in the maintenance of a safe and clean environment, under the direction of the Director of Nursing and/or Medical Director.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Must be able to interact positively with clients on a daily basis whose behavior may be difficult, uncooperative or aggressive.
- Must be able to perform concentrated and/or complex mental activity with frequent involvement in complex and/or highly technical situations;
- Must be able to work successfully under highly stressful conditions;
- Must be able to make sound, independent judgments based on scientific and/or ethical principles;
- Must be able to comprehend and perform oral and written instructions and procedures;
- Must be able to collaborate with other multidisciplinary team members in an appropriate fashion;
- Must be capable of adapting to varying workloads and work assignments on a constant basis;
- Must have effective comprehensive reading skills, strong communication skills, written and verbal.
- Must possess a valid Arizona Driver’s License
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or Equivalent required; Minimum two (2) years of education focused on nursing, psychology, social service, medicine or related field preferred.
- Training or experience in substance abuse and/or behavioral health services; preferred.
- Healthcare Provider CPR and First Aid, Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card, Handle with Care, and TB within the first 90 days of hire and annually thereafter.
- Must be able to demonstrate special training, knowledge and skills, as well as job and/or program specific competency within the first three (3) months of training, and annually thereafter.
- Must be certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation/ First Aid upon hire and recertified every 2 years thereafter.
- Must complete all required mandatory in-services annually.
- Must be tested for Tuberculosis with a PPD skin test or chest x-ray upon hire; PPD skin test required annually or chest x-ray as indicated
- Must be certified in Handle With Care within the first three (3) months of hire and annually thereafter.
- Mental demands include but are not limited to emotional stability, physical stamina and agility to handle stress and respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations.
Primary Criteria/Responsibilities:
- Consistently provides supervision for assigned clients.
- Clearly documents observations of patient behavior.
- Performs daily patient care tasks which could cleans patient living areas which may include soiled beds and floor area as needed.
- Ensures safety of patient at all times.
- Escorts clients to events away from the facility such as recreational and other activities, Court for hearings, Emergency Room or clinician’s office as necessitated by their physical condition.
- Consistently records and/or reports to the Director of Nursing any treatments, results, observations, patient complaints, and other pertinent information regarding the condition of the patient.
- Obtains accurate vital signs, weight and height, intake and output, and documents information appropriately.
- Demonstrates the ability to communicate the status of the patient’s condition accurately, timely and legibly.
- Completes rounds and documents findings accurately and timely.
- Recognizes changes in patient’s affect, behavior, mood and level of suicidality or self-harm.
- Recognizes changes in vital signs, LOC, breathing patterns, diet, bowel or bladder habits, skin condition, or hygiene. Reports changes to Director of Nursing in a timely manner.
- Performs/assists with linen changes, brief changes, or the use of the bed pan/urinal if necessary.
- Maintains NPO or other dietary restrictions as appropriate.
- Utilizes fall precautions when appropriate. Requests assistance when needed.
- Uses transfer devices appropriately. Requests assistance when needed.
- Notifies Director of Nursing of clients with potential risk of injury due to falls, self-destructive, or assaultive behavior. Communicates the potential risk of patient injury to others.
- Demonstrates effective management of assaultive behavior and competence in Handle with Care.
- Follows appropriate observation level for clients.
- Utilizes most facilitative measures to de-escalate clients, such as 1:1 conversation (“1:1”), diversional activities, groups, peer support, or decreased stimuli.
- Uses appropriate techniques to communicate with hearing impaired clients.
- Is available for 1:1 interactions with clients. Assists in providing intervention and/or management of inappropriate behavior.
- Provides assistance, direction and structure for the visually impaired.
- Prioritizes interventions in rapidly changing patient situations.
- Completes patient belongings and contraband check, performs visual exam of the skin, and documents accurately.
- Regularly assumes responsibility for patient clothing and personal property by securing items in accordance with established procedures; accurately notes and provides safe care for patient valuables.
- Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of universal precautions, infection control and isolation techniques.
- Follows discharge (DC) procedures under the guidance of the Director of Nursing.
- Ensures Clients’ Rights and Confidentiality are maintained.

- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and ability to collaborate with medical staff, other health professionals to achieve desired outcomes for specific groups served.
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills to interpret patient specific data and appropriately consulting with other team members and/or planning care based on those results.
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and ability to assess and provide appropriate interventions in the event of abnormal family dynamics.
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and ability to provide a safe environment of care and recognize safety risks/considerations.
- Must be able to demonstrate proper application and knowledge of policies and procedures related to restraint alternatives and usage.
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and ability to provide structured educational groups.

- While performing job duties, the employee is regularly required to sit and speak or hear.
