We are offering a $1,000 hire incentive to this Full-time Licensed Mental Health Counselor. $500 upon hire, and $500 after 6 months of continued employment with St. Joe’s. Location: Veterans Program – Saranac Lake, NY
Position: Full-time Mental Health Counselor
Candidate must be working toward becoming a LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) or LMHC (Licensed Mental Health Counselor).
Position Summary: Under the direct supervision of a Qualified Health Professional, functions as a resource to Primary Counselors in assisting with mental health-related treatment services, interventions, and ethical conduct of staff regarding mental health treatment; also functions as a primary counselor responsible for effective case management of an appropriate caseload. If appropriately credentialed, may be asked to provide clinical supervision to staff including the implementation of modern principles, practices, and techniques of chemical dependency.
Education and Training: Minimum requirement of Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services or related field, Master’s Degree preferred. Candidate must be tracking towards either a Licensed Clinical Social Worker or Licensed Mental Health Counselor. Must be CPR certified. Must be computer literate.
Experience and Work Knowledge: Knowledge of modern principles and practices of chemical dependency programs and treatment services. Knowledge of mental health diagnoses, effective treatment modalities to augment substance use disorder treatment and ability to educate residents and staff on benefits of incorporating mental health treatment into the program. Preferably trained in evidence-based practices relevant to military culture, particularly trauma-informed modalities (CPT, PE, etc.).

Essential Duties:
- Develop and maintain therapeutic relationship with residents.
- Actively participate in clinical supervision (to include additional supervision with an appropriate resource with a similar degree/license/background).
- Function as supportive multi-disciplinary team member.
- Support resident retention initiatives, to include broadening mental health services.
- Facilitate didactic lectures related to chemical dependency, mental health, and associated subjects.
- Facilitate and document group therapy sessions.
- Complete thorough admission procedure for residents.
- Complete accurate and thorough Clinical Summaries and Diagnostic Impressions.
- Develop resident-centered Master Treatment Plans utilizing Strengths, Needs, Abilities, Preferences (SNAP) approach.
- Discuss viable and appropriate aftercare planning with residents throughout treatment.
- Engage as liaison between community resources and in house for mental health diagnosed residents and assist in coordinating appropriate care while they are receiving treatment services.
- Provide weekly individual sessions for residents.
- Maintain treatment plans/reviews and progress notes per compliance regulations and clearly identifying treatment received and progress demonstrated for residents in the electronic health record.
- Create Discharge Summaries that accurately reflect resident progress and rationale for discharge.
- Develop Aftercare Plans that accurately reflect resident’s progress.
- Complete accurate and timely documentation of case management and counseling responsibilities.
- Adhere to all documentation and treatment guidelines.
- Communicate in an objective manner with colleagues regarding resident concerns regarding mental health issues, either in verbal or written form.
- Demonstrate consistent improvement in counseling skills and techniques.
- Demonstrate familiarity of and sensitivity to military culture.
- Display professional image, appearance, and behavior reflective of SJATRC Mission, policies, and procedures.
- Assure compliance with all necessary regulations to include specific individual mental health treatment interactions in coordination with Primary Counselors.
- Actively participate in meetings, committees, and quality assurance activities.
- Maintain continued professional education.
- Maintain NYS license(s) and/or credentials as appropriate.
- Conduct observational rounds of facility throughout shift.
- Provide conflict resolution support for and between residents.
- Provide support and counseling to residents other than assigned caseload as needed.
- Respond to emergency situations in accordance with SJATRC policies and procedures.
- Communicate pertinent clinical information to other staff through documentation.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Program Director.
